Sam Brownstone & The Paintettes
An artistic craftsman takes a chance on public access television, but when he can’t seem to face his fears, he turns to his darkside.
Directing the Film (dir. 2025)
As part of the 48-Hour Film Project, wherein which teams around the country compete to write, shoot, and edit a film in just 48 hours, Sam Brownstone & The Paintettes (2025) was born!
Directing a 48-hour film is not something you’re ever prepared for. You essentially take on the role of Assistant Director, Producer, Assistant Editor, AND Director, while also working in coalition with the people who actually have those jobs. It’s intense, it’s heavy, and it’s a lot of work for something that might not even see the light of day. In short, it’s not for the weak.
Par for the course in a 48-Hour film challenge, improvisation was key. With the film being a comedy, allowing the actors to find their own comedic chops was integral to the film and it’s humorous core. The film wouldn’t be anywhere near as funny if it weren’t for each and every on-the-fly contribution that the actors gave, whether that be in a line cue, an emotional tick, or an action.
Sam Brownstone & The Paintettes was an experience unlike any other. It taught everyone the value in being free with your art, trusting your skills, and knowing that, at the end of the day, filmmaking is supposed to be fun.
